Can we talk about the baby product industry for a moment? Because it is absolutely wild out there.
You are pregnant, you are emotional, you want the absolute best for your baby, and suddenly there are approximately four thousand products all claiming to be essential for your child's survival and happiness. The wipe warmer. The special bath thermometer. The seven different types of swaddle. The bassinet that costs as much as a flight to Europe. And somehow you find yourself at 11pm adding things to a registry because what if your baby needs this specific brand of nose aspirator.
Here is the truth. Babies need very little. They need warmth, milk, safe sleep, clean nappies, and you. Everything else is extra. And a lot of what gets marketed to new parents gets used for two weeks and then sits in a cupboard gathering dust until you give it away.
We mamas would genuinely do anything for our babies. Which is exactly why it is worth knowing what is actually useful and what is just a very well designed advertisement. This registry cuts through all of it. What you genuinely need, what is worth considering, and what you can confidently skip without your baby even noticing.
Your wallet will thank you. And so will your storage space. 😄
A good baby registry is not about having everything. It is about having the right things.
The absolute essentials — must haves
No debate here. Every baby needs these things. Start here before anything else.
Safe sleep setup
Newborns sleep up to 18 hours a day. Their sleep setup is the most important thing you will buy. Get this right first.
- Cot or bassinet — always buy new or check second-hand against current safety standards
- New organic cot mattress — always buy new, firm, and flat. An organic mattress eliminates exposure to flame retardant chemicals and off-gassing foam
- 3-4 fitted sheets — organic cotton is softer, more durable, and free from pesticide residues
- 2-3 swaddle blankets — muslin swaddles are lightweight, breathable, and multi-purpose
Organic Cotton Fitted Cot Sheets — Set of 3
GOTS certified organic cotton cot sheets — soft, durable, and free from pesticide and chemical processing residues. Gentle against newborn skin for all those hours of sleep.

What goes on your list here depends on how you plan to feed. Breastfeeding needs the least equipment but there are a few things that make it much easier. Formula feeding needs more kit. Here is what to consider for each:
- Nursing bras (2-3) — sized after 36 weeks when your size is most predictable
- Breast pump — an electric double pump is most efficient if you plan to return to work
- Nursing pads — reusable organic cotton pads are eco-friendly and economical
- Nipple cream — pure lanolin or organic coconut oil
- Nursing pillow — supports positioning and reduces arm fatigue
- Glass bottles (4-6) — necessary even for breastfed babies as an occasional backup
Reusable Organic Cotton Nursing Pads
Washable organic cotton nursing pads — soft, absorbent, and economical. Far better for sensitive nipple skin than disposable alternatives, and produce zero ongoing waste.

- Nappies — cloth (recommended) or eco-disposable for the newborn period while you find your feet
- Wipes — reusable cloth wipes for home, biodegradable disposables for out
- Nappy cream — a natural zinc oxide cream for rash prevention
- Changing mat — waterproof, wipeable, and portable
- Wet bags — for storing used cloth nappies and wet items when out
Clothing
Babies grow so fast it is almost insulting. A newborn outfit might get worn twice before it no longer fits. Buy minimally in each size and resist the urge to stock up on cute things months in advance — by the time you get there your baby may have skipped that size entirely.
- 6-8 onesies per size (newborn and 0-3 months to start)
- 4-6 sleepsuits/rompers per size
- 2-3 warm layers for the relevant season
- Hats (newborns lose heat rapidly through their heads)
Organic cotton is worth it for baby clothes because it is genuinely more durable — it washes better and lasts longer. And secondhand baby clothes are an excellent choice. They have usually been worn a handful of times and are in great condition. Your baby will not know or care. Your wallet will thank you.
Organic Cotton Baby Bodysuit Multipack
GOTS certified organic cotton bodysuits — the most-used item in a baby's wardrobe. Softer than conventional cotton, better for sensitive newborn skin, and durable enough for multiple washes.

These things are not in the must-have category but most parents are very glad they have them. Think of this as the nice-to-have list that actually gets used.
Baby carrier or wrap
A good baby carrier is one of those purchases that new parents consistently say was worth every cent. Your baby gets to be close to you, which they love. You get your hands free, which you will desperately need. It helps with settling, with breastfeeding, and with getting things done while also keeping a newborn happy. One of the best things on this list.
Ergonomic Baby Carrier — Newborn to Toddler
A well-designed ergonomic baby carrier supports proper hip development (M-position), distributes weight evenly across your hips and shoulders, and grows with your baby from newborn to toddler.

Once your baby is in their own room you will want a monitor. A basic audio one does the job perfectly well. Video is convenient but genuinely not necessary. You will hear your baby. They are very loud.
White noise machine
White noise is genuinely magic for newborn sleep. It sounds like the womb which is the only sound environment your baby has ever known. A dedicated white noise machine is better than a phone or tablet near a sleeping baby. Many also work as nightlights so you get two things in one.
What you can skip entirely
These are the things you will see everywhere and do not need. Save your money.
- Nappy bin/pail — a regular bin with a lid works perfectly
- Baby bath — bathing a newborn in a clean washing-up bowl or on a folded towel in the regular bath is completely fine
- Changing table — a changing mat on the floor is safer and more versatile
- Wipe warmer — unnecessary and a fire hazard
- Baby food processor — a regular blender or hand blender works identically
- Elaborate nursery decor — your newborn cannot see clearly beyond 30cm and has no interest in nursery themes
- Newborn shoes — babies cannot walk, cannot feel the ground through shoes, and their feet need to move freely
Building your eco registry
When choosing what goes on your registry, think about things that will last through more than one child, are made from natural materials, and do more than one job. Multi-functional beats single-purpose every time when you are short on space and budget.
If you have eco-conscious values, a quick note on your registry explaining them goes a long way. Most people genuinely want to give you something useful. Alternatively ask for contributions to a nappy fund instead of specific products — it gives you the flexibility to choose what actually works for your family rather than ending up with seven of the same thing.
